Does it make sense to move the upload folder to a separate server in Bitrix?

The bottom line - there is BitrixVM, which has already consumed 200 GB of disk space. At the same time, 180 GB is occupied by upload. As we know, it is quite difficult to expand the space on a VM (you need to create a copy of a virtual disk, relink, etc.). Our admins have already expanded twice and both times I was worried that everything would break.

The idea came to mind, to throw all the contents of the upload folder on a separate server with a good large storage, let's say a terabyte. And drop the mount.

What I see as pluses of this implementation:

  1. If necessary, you can connect the test server to the actual upload of the production
  2. The weight of backups is reduced from 200 GB to 20 GB.
  3. All important files (contracts, passport scans, etc.) are stored in a separate place, and even if the application crashes, they will remain.
  4. You no longer have to bother with expanding the space on the prod.

Of the possible disadvantages:
  1. Increasing the complexity of the system. And the implementation itself requires additional effort.
  2. Purely theoretically, the connection between the production and the storage may be broken. I don't know what will happen.)
  3. The requests will probably take longer. By the way, this is also a question. There are only binaries, and in theory, the browser will simply access the file not at 10.222.22.22, but at 10.222.11.11?

And the question is - is it worth going on this adventure?
