Does it make sense to do regional domains?

We want to try to expand the geography of our Internet service and, apparently, for each region it will be necessary to create separate sections or sites on separate domains. Actually the question is in the pros and cons of both approaches. Are domains relevant for Google? How much time will it take for a programmer to cut regional domains? Are there any trends that this approach may soon be irrelevant? Thank you.

With domains, you will have an eternal hassle with certificates. Easier sections + branches in Google My Business.
