Does it make sense to build from ffmpeg sources?

On a not overpowered machine with an i7-3520M running ubuntu 16.04, streaming with obs is intermittently required. As far as I understand, he uses ffmpeg as a backend. Is it possible to get a noticeable performance gain by tuning ffmpeg?
