Does a graphic designer need a master's degree?
Hello Toaster!
I will tell about myself. I'm a final year graphic design student in a city of 500k. For several years I have been working by profession, freelancing for a couple with my husband (layout). And in the near future I do not plan to get a job in the office.
Every day the question of magistracy is becoming more and more acute. The parents insist. They describe the daughter / son of a friend who graduated from the magistracy and now got a very cool job in Moscow (in fact, a stewardess, manager, etc.). Naturally, I understand that a master's degree in our city will not give me knowledge, it will only take 2 years, during which you can develop your skills and establish relationships with customers, implement your projects, and just live in peace, buying cups in IKEA, and not handing over sessions with a burning ass. But at the same time, there is a small chance that I will not work as a freelancer all my life, and when I go to get a job in a company, they will wave the pen to me. no paper.
Is a master's degree in design really that important, or are these all relics of the Soviet past?

My opinion is that they are survivors. At least no one accepts only one "piece of paper" for work, you need a portfolio.
What is a master's degree? This is when I left work for a couple of hours to pass a lab / exam. This is when I sent a file to the department during lunch. This is when the day off, but there is no one to spend it with.
Master's degree will not take you 2 years. Do not invent difficulties out of the blue. Learn while you can.
Alas, you are already working; when applying for a job at IT Co., a year of experience outweighs any master's degree.
If you want to realize the dreams of your parents - listen to them and go to the magistracy.
If you want to realize your dreams - listen to yourself and do what you love.
maybe it's better to look towards some well-known foreign design schools?
there are definitely prospects for better connections and better work
In fact, no one will watch. There is already a tower in case of immigration.
On the other hand, if it is interesting there, then why not go. Later it will be much more difficult to study.
ps If you successfully freelance, then I can hardly imagine how you will go to the office =)
A master’s degree in itself is of no value if you don’t get a cool final work
Master’s is a step towards Phd
If your goal is to work in science, go to a master’s program, if not, don’t go
At this age, the requirements of parents have no power
Not everything is so simple...
1. Master's will give you a chance to study something related to graphic design, but not directly. For example, industrial design, maybe. some architectural stuff (not sure), etc. After all, you can enter the magistracy not only in the same direction as the bachelor's degree, but also in a related one (subject to passing the exams). But here you need to explore all the possibilities.
M.b. you need to move to another city where there is a required direction? In principle, both of you are no longer students, and this is not a problem with fin. points of view. Those. take what you need from education - base , knowledge and skills :)
2. If you ever apply for a job in another country, then Master of smth. (Arts or yours) is always better and preferable to Bachelor of smth. In addition, as mentioned above, Master is a stepping stone on the way to PhD.
If the master's program is free for you (1st) AND you do not reject the possibility of working in another country AND you expand your knowledge in another area, then definitely YES.
If everything suits you at the moment, you will not move anywhere (and do not even consider it), then it is unlikely.
PS For my part, I think that it is necessary to use free education (provided that the direction is chosen wisely ).
