Do you need a back to top button on your site?

The question is tormenting. Is this button needed on the site? How often do you use it yourself? Why is it missing on almost all major sites (Yandex, Google, etc.)?

Why is it missing on almost all major sites (Yandex, Google, etc.)?

And the devil knows. Maybe because it is easier for the user to scroll on their own or press the Home key (or Page up a couple of times) than to look for this button. Or maybe it is needed only where there is a very long content feed (not only social network - on Habré, for example, under a long read there can still be a heated discussion several thousand pixels down).

Now on sites, the menu is often nailed to the top of the page and remains there when scrolling. So the need to go upstairs is practically eliminated.
Search engines may assume that the visitor will find what they need in the search results, and will not hang out on their page back and forth. The fact that the request needs to be reformulated usually becomes clear from the first results.
Personal feeling: I usually do not see this "up" button, and it is necessary not to the top, but to the middle.
What I hate is when they remove the browser scroll and make a thin strip appear only when hovering over the area where the scroll should normally be, which the mouse cannot even hold.
