Do screens in Linux Ubuntu switch by themselves?

My laptop is running Ubuntu 14.04. For some reason, when I plug in the laptop, it seems that I plug in vga and an external monitor is connected (although in fact not). On 16.04 this is not the case. What could be the problem and has anyone had this?
