Do I need to write a wrapper for memchache?

Don't ask where or when. (Long ago) I read a post that talked about a wrapper for memcache. So the question is, is it worth it at all, or does it already provide enough methods for solving routine tasks?
Isn't it considered bad manners to abandon its wrapper, as is the case with PDO.
