Do I need to organize a thematic meeting? Will anyone go?
There was an idea to organize a meeting of system administrators on the topic “building a cluster for shared hosting”. Of course, I have a personal interest in this topic. This is a task that cannot be solved in a narrow circle of people (in one company, for example).
The ultimate goal of a series of activities that will start with this meeting is to write a complete documentation (wiki) about creating an easy-to-manage cluster, with a convenient panel, friendly to end users. And, of course, easily scalable, fault-tolerant. With a convenient control panel. At the moment, I have chosen ispmanager (not ispmanager cluster, but the usual one, which can be bought for 1000 rubles). Clusterctl has a huge number of bugs that most likely won't be fixed any time soon.
The intermediate goal is to gather a team of people who are ready to participate in the implementation of the final goal. At the same time, the list of problems forces us to find not only people who need the cluster itself, but also several specialists in narrow areas.
What is? There is a very clear concept that I am ready to tell the audience. But there are several problems and bottlenecks in the concept, which just need to be discussed and solved. Of course, I'm not a guru and any criticism of the whole concept is important to me.
In general, I see the whole idea as follows: the first meeting is a presentation, a quick discussion, a list of problems that need to be overcome. Further, several meetings in a narrow circle (well, or not very narrow) - a discussion of specific problems. Then - work online, building several test clusters. Documentation writing, publishing.
Moscow city. There is an opportunity to discuss specific directly asked questions with guru-admins of various companies, including very cool companies. The problem is that they are not interested in building such a cluster and are only ready to help with specific answers and little advice.
If at least 10 people participate in the project, this is already an opportunity to really finish it. For the participants, perhaps a cool line in the resume.
The purpose of this topic-question is to determine whether there are people at all who are interested in this topic.
You should not write "I would love to participate, but I have little experience." If you have ever raised a web server and are ready to study the documentation, then you have a great chance to help us. The main thing is the desire to help and the “correct” thinking. I repeat - getting to the stock of knowledge is not a problem, the initial problem is to select a list of problems that need to be solved.
The whole undertaking is non-commercial. Documentation will be available publicly. If any of the hosters is interested, I will only be glad, but you shouldn’t pull the blanket over yourself, we do it for everyone, but not for you.
If you are ready to participate, but are not registered on Habré, write to me at root [at] vlad.pro.
Estimated time for the first meeting is the 20th of June.
Questions like “why is this even necessary?” in this topic is also not worth asking.
