What about studying it? from the browser you send a request to the server, the server sends you a response, you process it in the browser. Just without reloading the entire page. What is there to study?
An alternative is probably websocket, but in essence the meaning is the same

1) There would be something to study there, a few evenings
2) A lot of old projects on AJAX you can't edit them if you don't know
