Do I need to do any practice while reading the book "Perfect Code" or can it be read like fiction?

Who has already read the book "Perfect Code", tell me, can I read it away from the computer? Or is there still some kind of task there, or will it just be necessary to drive in code examples and you can’t do without a computer?
I’m choosing a book for the road, so I need to know if it can be read away from the computer ...
Well, or advise some other book of a general direction that is not tied to a specific language and which will not be purely artistic.
I thought about taking Tanenbaum "Computer Networks", but a couple of months ago I tried to read it. but after 120 pages I realized that I understood almost nothing ... it would be a bit complicated.

The book reads almost like a book. There are no exercises in it that you need to perform as you read. But I would recommend it to people with at least a couple of years of experience, because the perception of the material will be very different.
