Do I need a college degree to get a job in data science, or is self-education enough through online courses and books?
I heard that in programming, the presence of VO is not a mandatory factor when applying for a job. I wonder how in Data science?

In data science, as far as I can see, every second degree is a Ph.D. Without deep knowledge of mathematics there is nothing to do there.
It all depends on what you are starting from. If there is a good (not average, namely good and rough) training in the tower at a good technical university, preferably in an IT specialty, then you can start mastering DS yourself. The question is - do you have enough time and diligence. Because, unlike learning the same programming languages here in a couple of months, you definitely can’t manage it.
