Distance courses in Java programming?

Hello. I was approached for advice by a friend who is determined to learn programming. Since there are no courses in our city, he relies on distance learning. The choice fell on Java, I will not discuss this, since a holivar may arise :) He has some initial knowledge (at the level of understanding standard constructs like if, when, for).
So, I spent enough time to search for such courses in RuNet, but I never found something worthwhile - in most cases, the proposals look more like either a deception, or they are somehow frivolously described, formed, with unreasonable and each different prices.
I hope that some of the visitors of Habrahabr faced a similar problem, or just knows where there are good courses. I will be very grateful.

I don't understand these courses. The person to whom to turn with a question, why is it needed, if you yourself did not reach the solution of the issue, and you immediately prompted him, then this is some kind of dead end path for me, it will not teach you anything. There is a huge amount of literature on Java, take it, make real programs, solve the problems yourself - this will give you invaluable experience. And so that everyone chewed up and told ... well, I don’t believe it like that.

There is such a wonderful Java programmer podcaster as Budam ("Sun Microsystems nominated and awarded him the title of Java Champion - just over 100 people in the world have this title."). Here he is recruiting a group to conduct a course on java + Flex. All the details in his podcast bit.ly/i4JjcD. And here is the link to www.eventbrite.com/event/1148096989
"During this 2-month online training, you will learn how to develop both client and server applications in the Java programming language."

The hardcore version of understanding the best programming practices (this is just about patterns and architecture) is to start dealing with some popular open source software. There, in most cases, everything is well designed, so there will be something to learn from ... but this is a rather difficult path)
