DE scaling when screen resolution is too high

Is it possible in some way to scale the entire desktop, for example, as it is done in android?
That is, add a layer between the actual screen resolution and the desired one.

Laptops that are now sold often have an oversized screen resolution. I'm not against any resolution when watching movies, but when working, everything becomes too small and you have to increase it by any means.

Increasing fonts and icons in the settings is often not enough, so the question arises, is there a mechanism that, like in android, allows you to set an arbitrary screen density, even with performance losses?

I'm using Debian 7 x86_64 / KDE 4.8.4

You can change the DPI in the X server settings, or with the help of the driver manufacturer's controls (nVidia, for example).
See here about DisplaySize

Here is what "Xorg -configure" is trying to create, /etc/X11/xorg.conf itself is missing.
