Data Engineer-intern, where to go, what to learn?

A two-part question:
1. What to teach someone who wants to build a career as a Data Engineer (without an eye on Data Science)? Apart from Python.
2. Are there any companies that are ready to hire an intern for this position? Not a junior, but a real trainee, near zero... :)

a scientist is one who can write ML algorithms himself, an engineer is one who uses ready-made ones. accordingly, it is necessary to navigate the clustering algorithms, ML, and so on. it would be nice to look at SAS dataminer and navigate its bells and whistles, have an idea about PMML https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Predictive_Model_Mar...
