I want to connect to ESP8266 via JTAG for debugging and flashing. Is it even possible? It has JTAG pins, but which programmer and software can be used?

Software: gdb compiled by crosstool-NG (for example, as part of esp-open-sdk), OCD monitor:

Programmers -- any supported OpenOCD if you use the second link.
If the first is Flyswatter2, Olimex ARM-USB-TINY-H, or compatible.
