Component Object Model Interop?

There was a task to connect to the program using the COM (Component Object Model) tool. I myself program in AS3, a little bit in Java, so I'm not familiar with such things. I tried to find at least something for Java, I found JACOB, JAWIM, com4j, but I did not find a clear description anywhere.
Possibly give me links or books where I can find what it is. Preferably in Russian and with examples.
