Commands do not work in mac os terminal: CREATE, DROP... How to solve?

When entering commands:
postgres=# CREATE DATABASE DB_NAME;
CREATE DATABASE

I get an error:
zsh: command not found: CREATE

How to cure, who knows?

these commands need to be run in the postgres console, not the macos.
