Color Overlay vs Paint Bucket Tool what for what?

I read that the Color Overlay can be used instead of the Paint Bucket Tool to speed up the work, however, when using the Paint Bucket Tool, an empty layer is filled with the selected color, and when applying the Color Overlay, there is no - it turns out that the essence of these tools is different? - help me understand this difference, plz, - I feel that this is some kind of fundamentally important difference for understanding how to work with layers in Photoshop.

In addition to what has already been said, in general, both tools can do the same thing , but in different ways. The difference will be in the specific situation and the accuracy of the result, and in the hands of the master, in fact, these tools will solve completely different tasks.
Filling with color can be used both for the entire background and for its individual parts (if it is some kind of pattern/drawing). it is a tool, like a brush or the like.
Here's an example : I can fill it with the entire background of layer 1 (filled with red) and part of the pattern in layer 2. Layer 2 had a white central rectangle and I painted it green with the Paint Bucket Tool. At the same time, if I painted through the layer effect, then the entire layer would become painted over and the patterns on it would disappear ( like this ).
As you can see, only white is filled with green up to the borders with black. You can adjust the sensitivity of the tool (look at the panel at the top of the page when you select the tool) and then the tool will fill not only those pixels that were poked into, but also with a similar color.
This can be checked on any photographs, i.e. not on pure colors as in my example.
And the effect with the Color Overlay fill is applied not to the selected area, but to the entire layer or other object as a whole (shape, text, mask, etc.). This is the difference between these tools.
For example, if the layer has jagged edges, then filling with color will make them even worse, and applying the color overlay effect will color even translucent pixels according to this very transparency. Example: here is a green shape on top, painted with a soft brush. Layer 1 I painted over with the Paint Bucket Tool, and layer 2 was repainted with the Color Overlay layer effect (you can see that not the entire canvas is painted, but only the part where the graphics were). I think the difference is obvious =)

Well hello. How is it not? In Color Overlay, you choose the color you want in the same way. That's why it is "overlapping with color" (approximate translation). You need to not only check the box next to this effect, but also go into it and select a color (and you can also adjust the transparency and blending mode there)
