CMS for portfolio/photo gallery?

I need to make a portfolio for an artist-designer.
The requirements are high, as even the design and navigation will be entirely the creation of the owner, so the structure will certainly be far from standard. The template, that is, regardless of the engine, will be typeset from scratch.
1. Is it worth looking for a profile CMS for photo galleries in such a situation, or is it better to take any normal Joomla / etc. and do everything on it?
2. Well also advise normal [profile] CMS. Preferably free and open source. The presence of at least a minimum sufficient admin panel is a must.
I watched Koken - somehow I was not impressed, or I did not buy out all the chips that it provides. Will I be able to do what is required on its basis?
Very useful, along with recommendations, will be examples of the implementation of complex beautiful design sites on these CMS.

Under WP, there are a bunch of templates with the functionality of a good portfolio site.

I do not advise you to contact Joomla, but WP is quite suitable for yourself. Plugins are really full for photo galleries and other things.

In addition to Koken'a, you will not advise anything else that is travelling. Perhaps it remains only to take joomla / wordpress / drupal and cut out what you need. For example, on the same WordPress you can create a pretty gallery. Well, or create a simple CMS for yourself - but this is already more difficult.

I was looking for something similar, in the end I returned to Joomla. Yet it is more popular and proven.

It just so happens that I've been using coppermine-gallery for galleries all my life
Not that it's the best, but it's definitely good, free, free, open source, convenient (for my tasks) admin panel and functional enough to solve all my
I haven’t been able to assemble even half of the functionality I needed with any plugins or modules, but Coppermine already has them all Yes
, Coppermine is a CMS exclusively for galleries, it’s unlikely that anything more can be collected on it, than a gallery, but a gallery of very high complexity can be assembled on it much easier than on everything else that I managed to probe.
