Chrome. Extension development - live edit

Some time ago I started making a chrome extension. Then he abandoned it, and now he returned and wanted to continue development.
And of course, the first thing I came across was a problem with loading the extension - every time after making changes, you have to go to the extension page and click "Update".

It seems to me that when I started making an extension, all the changes I made immediately appeared in the extension, without the need to poke "Update". Developed in PhpStorm'e - I think on his LiveEdit.

Now, on the same storm, nothing happens - you have to go and poke "Update".
Maybe I'm wrong and it really seemed to me - that the changes were picked up on the fly?

Depending on what you mean. If background or content scripts - you need to update. The rest should be picked up. Now I specifically checked it, the changes in the popup-window code were picked up immediately.
