I can't help with literature - self-taught. There are a lot of articles on the Internet (here , for example , although some of the author’s views are controversial), you can eventually go to courses.
As for technology, I can recommend something from Micro 4/3, and specifically from Olympus.
The choice of optics is all that is needed. Stub in carcass. The latest cameras have an excellent matrix. Model depending on requests: E-PL5 / E-P5 (in a week or two it will appear in the Russian Federation) / OM-D E-M5. Touch screen, more possibilities than an amateur needs.

Literature in bulk has been written over the years. There is a good series of articles " How to take pictures with a mirrorless camera ", the author of this cycle is Anton Martynov , whose work, I personally, have been following for a long time.
Regarding the device, I would advise the Sony Alpha NEX-6L, I really liked the model when I was playing, although the Nikon fan himself, who is in the backpack (decided to change it to a mirrorless one), or if you don’t fit the budget - 5L. I liked it more in terms of quality and convenience than Nikon or Olympus.

For my part, I will support NEX 6. BUT! I strongly advise you to go to the store and hold them in your hands. Not so long ago I thought about buying myself such a thing, but it turned out that the small size is not only an advantage, but also a big drawback, since it is uncomfortable in the hand. After a normal DSLR, holding this little thing is somehow very inconvenient. And for a couple of days I walked with a neighbor's camera (NEX 3), but I never got used to it. He spat on this matter, remained with a full-fledged SLR.

If you are completely new, then maybe you should first pay attention to entry-level compact cameras? If you like taking pictures, you can upgrade to something more serious. For example, I take pictures for myself and my family, and this camera is enough for me: Canon PowerShot SX260 HS with a large zoom and 12 megapixels, and the price does not bite :)

I will support the idea of m4 / 3 - a huge fleet of optics, the latest Olympus models are in no way inferior to junior DSLRs, and in some places even middle ones. True, Olik has very specific ergonomics, but you can get used to it. There is Panasonic, I like its ergonomics and autofocus much more, I started with the G2, but still switched to Olympus, primarily because of the excellent camera jeep. You can compare the jeep here and in general the Russian club here .
