Hello. Here a colleague drowns for the picture tag, they say, like fashionable stylish youth ...
I change the pictures either with a script or with the scrset attribute in the img tag itself. Why even saw all this horror around img? Please explain what img cannot do without this source?

For me personally, the practical meaning of picture lies in the use of several formats. More specifically, the main file in webp plus jpeg fallback - traffic savings of the order of 20-30%.
This is a small part of the possibilities, but in most cases I use only it.
