Can threads suddenly go to sleep?

There is an assumption that when the http connection is broken (or for some other reason), the threads suddenly interrupt their execution, possibly going into the WAIT or SLEEP state. It's not about delays during the work of the GC, namely when the http request stops being processed by the stream for some reason.
Could this be?
