Can the system be built into a laptop?

At one time, when I just bought an ASUS laptop (it was about 10 months ago, that is, the warranty had almost expired), a licensed windows 8.1 was installed on it. But it has not been activated. I already thought that they simply deceived me and installed a pirated system, but in the salon where I bought my laptop, they told me that the system would activate itself. To my great surprise, after a while it happened. So that's the crux of the issue. Can someone explain what this magic is? What level is my system at? Is it somehow sewn into the laptop? Or did I really just get fooled in the salon? I ask because I want to switch to Linux in the near future and I want to completely remove Windows, and at best, bury my license key for the future.

The laptop board has an OEM activation key. That's all the magic.
