Can the anonymous Tails system be trusted, is there any real evidence that this OS is reliable?

I wanted to burn the anonymous and secure Tails operating system to disk. So I doubt that this system is safe and reliable. Is there any concrete evidence that it is reliable? Just if it really is so safe, then I wonder why it is free? Anonymity and confidentiality are very important to me.
