Can only join an iterable error how to solve?

In the distance function, a digital value is returned, I try to convert it to a string and throw an error. Both the int type and the float type behave like this.
If you put the output before the conversion, everything is calmly displayed, but the problem is in the next. line
c = distance(x, y)
c = ''.join(c)
