Can I use a self-signed certificate on a subdomain?
I bought a thawte signed certificate for the main domain example.com. I want the front-end to access the API on the api.example.com subdomain also via a secure channel. Will the browser swear if I make a self-written certificate for a subdomain? Certificate without wildcard.

If it's not a wildcard certificate, then yes it will.
You need to take another one for a subdomain.
