Can I rent software?

There is a rental office for PCs and laptops. Wondering what happens to the installed software during the rental? Is it also for rent? It is legal? How to resolve the issue? Some prescribe in the contract that only hardware is rented, and the software is installed to check the performance - I would not want to do this. Thank you!
