Can I build my own caller ID for my home phone?

Can I collect identification numbers for a landline phone myself? (Well, or rather, I think it is possible, but how? Are there manuals, diagrams?)
Will it work in any network, or is it mandatory that the PBX holder turn on the ability to determine the number?

Subscriber analog signaling, in principle, does not transmit any caller ID. Caller ID - an additional telephony service, in general, not mandatory. You can determine the caller's number by connecting the phone to a digital line (bri, sip). The caller number is just a field (Caller-ID) in one signaling packet. The PBX can change the fields arbitrarily according to preconfigured logic. Actually, if this field is set to zero, it will not come to the end device.

Can. Previously, there were radio designers based on the Z80, where the "Russian caller ID" was implemented (which picked up the phone and "buzzed" into the line). Now on the new GATS there is a function "Euro Caller ID" (which does not pick up the phone), but it is not included everywhere, and often comes as an add-on. service.
Probably, both options can be implemented on a modern base - Arduino, etc.
Manuals and diagrams - look in the Radio magazine. Theory - in the numerous works of Goldstein.
