Can I activate Windows 8/8.1 with the key from "Upgrade 7 to 8"?

In 2012, I bought an upgrade from Windows 7 to Windows 8 on the MS website and successfully upgraded to Windows 8. Now the question has become about moving to new hardware and a disk, and I would like to cleanly install the system (and, possibly, even upgrade to Windows 10). Will I be able to activate the eight (apparently already 8.1) with the key received under the upgrade program, or will I have to put the seven again and update, update, ...?

no, you can't. the option is only to update from 7 to 8. I have the same key and this is torment.

Is there an answer to this question from Microsoft itself?

As I had a case:
1) Asked a question in a support. (I demolished the recovery in the laptop, and the system had to be put clean).
2) They said there might be activation issues.
3) Set with hard formatting. (with the removal of all partitions, because I installed it through UEFI, but it was MBR ... But this is not the point).
4) Activated with the key from Upgrade 7 to 8.
5) Profit!
