Can Gmail be someone else's IMAP mail client, or is there another solution?

Can Gmail act as a regular email client (as a replacement for a desktop application) for, for example, an existing workbox (imap)?
Or maybe there are other solutions?

If you are specifically collecting, then go to "Settings-> Accounts and import-> Check mail from other accounts (using POP3)" and follow the instructions to set up access to another mailbox via IMAP (ignore POP3).
