Building the debian-installer image

How is a Debian installation distribution compiled from source? If you unpack the iso image from debian.net, you can see that syslinux is responsible for loading the kernel, which loads vmlinuz and initrd. How to build them from source using a local mirror? It would be nice to see a script that builds a minimal image.
