Book on the basics of programming. What do you recommend?

Hello, I was accepted to a Polish university for a master's degree in computer science, before that I studied radio engineering and, accordingly, I have practically no knowledge for a master's degree in computer science.
Therefore, before starting my studies, I want to catch up at least a little lost time and read a book on the basics of programming.
I will also need to take 2 academic. differences:

• Database
  
• Social and professional problems of informatics
  

Therefore, I need a book on these areas as well.
And yet, for myself, I decided that I like the web more than creating applications, so it would be nice if the book you recommend was related to the web, but not essential.
