Best way to update packages in an old Vue.js project?

I got an old project on vue (nuxt.js), the versions of the packages in it are two years or even more behind.

You need to update the packages to the current state and bring them to a healthy state.

What is the best way to do this?
Is it really just npm update and the subsequent fix of all errors?
