Basic steps to create heightmaps from various images in photoshop?

Actually a subject. How to correctly translate an image (be it a portrait, profile, texture, etc.) into a height map in Photoshop. At least the basic steps? Thanks

Why photoshop? There is a special software for this. ArtCam to be exact.
