Automatically adding a new/updated sitemap to Google?

The question arose of how to automatically notify Google about:
1. Creating a new sitemap (when there are several)
2. Updating an existing one (for example, after adding content)
I found 2 ways:
1. Through the Google Search Console API - https://developers.google .com/webmaster-tools/sear...
It is necessary to bother with OAuth
2. Stupidly ping /ping?sitemap=
The question arises - are these methods equivalent? If so, why do we need a complicated first one, if you can stupidly ping?
