Are Java Applets still being used on the Web?

I met many times the opinion that the Java Applet on the Web is dead and replaced by JavaScript.
I want to ask if this is true?
Do they still use Java Applet in Frontend development?
(Or am I misunderstanding the purpose of applets?)

Use if you need tight integration with the operating system that is not available through JS. But it takes quite a bit of fiddling to get it all up and running well everywhere. Over the past year, I have had quite a few orders related to the development and support of applets.

Java, like Flash, is dead for the web.
Please don't rape the corpse.
