Any advice on a programming language?

Hello. It so happened that at work I have a lot of free time, which I do not know what to do with. So I decided to try to learn some kind of programming language. Goal: to learn something new and useful and maybe even change jobs in the future. So, as far as I understand, web and mobile development are now popular. I immediately liked JAVA and PHP. The heart somehow lies more in JAVA, since it is Android and the Web, in principle, too. Are you interested in writing simple sites and web applications in JAVA ?. Or still learn PHP?
Or maybe something else altogether? Interested in your opinion. Thanks

If you understand Java, Php will not be a problem. And then there is c#, which is similar to Java only better. And taking into account the fact that there is mono, there will be no problems with cross-platform.
As for small sites in Java - they almost never meet, it's too ... expensive. Basically, these are some kind of web services for some kind of mobile applications or internal systems.
If you want to practice - rewrite Jenkins.

Personally, I have an idea about PHP that this is the language that you know, if you know any other. Although because of this, at first you write your bikes for which then it turns out that there are built-in functions. This must be remembered.

learning Java for the sake of the web - well, this is quite some kind of hardcore.
if you are more interested in the web, then learning php is a completely normal idea.
as an option, you can learn C# and .net - it's definitely cooler than java, and the potential is much more than java. Yes, and there should be no problems with multiplatform (mono is developing well, there are cross-platform frameworks for mobile applications, and even ASP.NET MVC will soon be on multiplatform, I'm talking about vnext).
In general, if it's a pure web, then PHP is possible, and for everything else there is C #

Study both, it takes about three months to learn the language, that is, in six months you will know both well.

Don't confuse the popular with the necessary.

To write simple sites, you only need: html + css + javascript, if the site is more complicated and with CMS, then you can add PHP to the resulting set. Exclusively PHP unfortunately will not give you wide opportunities.
Regarding Java and applets - they can be included as separate applications within the site, there are good examples, it looks very nothing, as Wikipedia says: faster than js. So in java, in addition to android and client-web, you can write desktop applications for the server, which is a definite plus.
Regarding work: with knowledge of Java, you can find a job, with everyone else it is quite possible, but I only know about the situation with java. :)

I recommend C#. I myself have 2+ years of experience in php, a little bit in java and c++. C++ is a classic. But Java did not fail. And on Sea Sharp, you can make both websites and applications for mobile devices immediately for all platforms: windows, android, ios, etc. Well, the main plus is that Microsoft has the best manuals of all that are available, and plus most of them are on ru language.
