1) why don't you want to set captcha? If you do not want to load users with unnecessary actions, you can put invisible recaptcha

You can also use antibot cloud, this is a universal protection for any engines and sites in php. Even the free version is 99% protected from any spam, and at the same time from hacking, brute force, and content parsing. And people are less annoyed (people will see it for a couple of seconds when entering the site) than complex captchas and solving all sorts of puzzles.
