Alternative to ActiveX?

There is a simple intranet website where you need to sign some data using a digital signature. A program that can sign data is obviously installed on the client. You need to access this program for a signature: call a dll, or a java library (there is a wrapper for the java program).
How can this be done? Is there an alternative for ActiveX? Decisions only under IE and Win seem already antediluvian. Java Web Start is also being considered.

A classic of the genre for signing something with an EDS is Java applets. Both on the Internet and intranets.

intranet - sometimes installing a browser plugin can be quite inexpensive for the infrastructure (especially if it's firefox / chrome), otherwise it's better not to invent java ... or study the tools provided by the browser.
