Ajax removal of an item from the cart. How to be?

I want to remove items from the cart with Ajax. The issue is that some products are variable.
How to delete products? I read that you can set quantity 0, but I am tormented by vague doubts.
And how to pass data about the desired variable product to the script? Just an ID won't help, will it?

Well, WooCommerce does this by default.
And yes, the WC version must be at least 2.6 for it to work out of the box
