As an option, you can try a live CD with linux, the same ubuntu, it seems like HFS support was there if memory serves.
In fact, the best way would be to re-install the axis on another hard drive or nearby and pour information with it

HFS + with journaling in ro in the penultimate fedora was regularly mounted for me.
Even in the hackintosh installer, there was a lot of things for working with disks.
