A partition with Windows 10 is formatted on a laptop, how to download information from a laptop to an external hard drive?

Wanted to reinstall Windows 10 pro on a laptop. Pre-formatted the partition for installation. The following message popped up.
Windows cannot be installed to this drive. The selected disk has the GPT partition style.
"Windows cannot be installed on this area of the hard drive. This partition is a Microsoft recovery partition"
Then I deleted the partition. But this message has not disappeared and the create button is inactive.
The laptop has 1 hard drive with a capacity of 1tb, divided into two sections of 512 gb each.
I deleted the first partition, and on the second there was valuable information that I want to download from there to an external hard drive. How can I do this if Windows is not on the laptop?
