Let's start from the frameworks that you use, let's say if it's a bootstrap, I would just change the styles + add 1 js function to show on the side, if you write the menu from scratch, I would transform the standard wp_nav_menu using css (Read the function, this is important! !!), wrapping it, and with the help of js already showed / hidden.
