Is there a difference between Ubuntu and Ubuntu Gnome?

I choose between these two distributions, but a small question arose: is there a difference in them, except for the shell? I like Gnome and don't want to use Unity.
PS if there is no difference, then is it worth installing the latest Debian with gnome right away?

Wait 2 months)) ubuntu are back on gnome. Debian is fine too if you don't mind older packages
