How to create a new version of the site, keeping positions in the search results?

There is a very old site. They ordered to make a new design, but they want the positions in the PS to remain in place.
How can this be implemented? The first time I encounter old sites.

There are no guarantees. It happens that traffic sags when a new, more modern, light, correct design is introduced (look on the net - a bunch of such cases), everything happens relatively normally without any sharp fluctuations, sometimes traffic from the PS also grows.
Design is perhaps the most mysterious factor, although the official Yandex docks are generally silent about it (about its role in ranking).

Most likely it won't work. In any case, the PS will need to index and evaluate the new site. Even if you attach a new template to the old domain, the site may still fall in positions for a while. And then recover. No one can give you a 100% guarantee here.
The main thing is that the main parameters of the site do not change for the worse: download speed, usability, basic meta tags remain informative and useful. Therefore, you need to be very careful and attentive.

It is necessary that the structure of the document remains as identical as possible to the previous one - the service title and description tags and keywords (title, descritption, keywords), as well as the semantic elements themselves: texts and headings (h1...h6) remain the same.
Minimum content redesign - maximum visual presentation. CSS and markup to help :)
